Phnom Penh: On the morning of September 28, 2023, HE Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, presided over the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Autonomous Schools as a Key to Education Reform Participated by Dr. Sounieng, Director of the Faculty of Education at the National University of Laos , Dr. Wichian Chaiyabang, Director of the Lamplaimat Patana Foundation and one of the best-known educators in Thailand , Mr. Vignesh Naidu, Director of the HEAD Foundation in Singapore.

Mr. Kurt Bredenberg, Senior Technical Adviser ,Kampuchea Action to Promote Education (KAPE) And representatives from New Generation School, Hun Sen Prek Leap High School, Preah Sisowath High School, New Generation Hun Sen High School, Kampong Cham High School, Prek Anchanh High School and Peam Chi Kang High School.


This international conference aims to focus on learning how autonomous schools contribute to education reform, not only in Cambodia but throughout Southeast Asia, by sharing information experiences that make autonomous schools work. On this occasion, Mr. KURT BREDENBERG, Senior Technical Adviser of Kampuchea Action to Promote Education (KAPE) said: Through today’s conference, he hopes that countries that are implementing autonomous school programs such as Singapore, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia can work together. Decided to establish a permanent secretariat called NGS International. The Secretariat will provide a network for information sharing, research and publication, visits, grant opportunities, and conferences.

At the same time, His Excellency Dr. Deputy Prime Minister said that the Government of Cambodia is honored to host an international conference on Autonomous schools are key to education reform and sharing experiences in implementing the New Generation School Initiative (NGS) and learning from other countries to further promote the implementation of this program. His Excellency Dr. Deputy Prime Minister also added that there are currently 11 new generation schools in Cambodia. Thus, in response to the first phase of the Pentagon Strategic Plan In the seventh term of the National Assembly, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports will try to expand the New Generation schools.
In addition, based on the experience of the past 8 years, we observe that the success of the New Generation School reform is mainly based on the implementation of rich teaching methods, improving governance, fair assessment (Fair Assessment). And teaching transparency.
